Samuel Houlders - Operations Manager - UK Bus

I joined National Express Group in 2010 as a Controller in our Network Control Centre, dealing with on the day operational issues on our Coach network. In 2011, I applied for the National Express UK Bus Graduate Management Trainee scheme and was successful. I am currently Operations Manager at National Express Coventry, where I have 9 direct reports and am responsible for approximately 350 members of staff. I get a great sense of satisfaction in making sure that our employees feel empowered to give great customer service. I also thoroughly enjoy working in Operations - whilst it may sound cliché, it is certainly very true that no one day is the same.

Baldev Delay - Customer Service Manager - UK Bus

I joined National Express in August 1998 as a Bus Driver at Birmingham Central garage driving all the Birmingham Central routes. In 2005 I gained the position of Driving Instructor based at Miller Street and Walsall. I did this sporadically for 4 years which gave me a good understanding of how we train our drivers to the professional DSA standard. I also gained a variety of qualifications, such as NVQ Level 3 in Instruction, and knowledge from our Driver Trainers regarding various issues that they had experienced whilst driving, assisting us to deliver appropriate driving courses.

Alexandra Joy - Graduate Management Trainee 2016

I have recently joined National Express in September 2016 as a part of the UK Bus Graduate Management Trainee programme. I was really excited to be starting and am currently undertaking a structured training programme at our Wolverhampton site. You will meet new people every day as a graduate here and it really is a fast paced and exciting role that will have you thinking on your feet and problem solving. I have learnt so much in just a few weeks and I have already visited our rail network in London, the coach business and a variety of our garages across the West Midlands! There is still a great deal of the scheme that I am yet to experience and I am really looking forward to what my future at National Express holds.

Charlie Hatcher - General Manager - UK Coach

After graduating from the University of Sheffield with a degree in Business Management in July 2013, I started the National Express graduate scheme two months later. The initial few months were spent working in our Quality & Standards team on some project work for the onboard experience, with a close focus on the toilets! This gave me a good chance to gather my bearings in the company and liaise with various departments. It was in June 2014 when I made the move south to London Victoria Coach Station to takeover from a departing Duty Manager. It was my first experience of people management, looking after a shift-based team of 12. Within a month the station manager for NX had left the role and I covered the vacancy on an interim basis. Since taking on the station manager role permanently I have been working hard on our partnership with landlords, Transport for London. This has exposed me to yet another key business skill which is hard to teach at university. It has been an incredibly rewarding time for me in my career and an excellent platform for my development.

Alexandra Donaldson - Service Delivery Manager - UK Coach

I started on the National Express graduate scheme in September 2014, shortly after completing university. Unsure of my career direction, I was interested in the graduate programme because of the flexibility to experience different business functions. The experience I gained from working within different departments gave me valuable skills which helped me to secure the role I really wanted, which was in the Partner Operations team. I am currently the Service Delivery Manager for the South, where I am responsible for the service performance of our South-Eastern Operators. I am passionate about this role because I get to liaise with so many different people, whilst still having an element of work in Operations and its strategic aspects too. On top of all the great work opportunities I encountered, I was given the opportunity of a work placement in Africa, supporting the transport charity, Transaid.

Lynne Quinlivan - Product Delivery Supervisor - UK Bus

I first joined National Express (West Midlands Travel) 22 years ago as full time cleaner on the nightshift. I initially took the job as the hours suited, however the idea of working for a large company which offered job security was very appealing and the company providing a uniform, bus pass and pension were an added benefit!

Stuart Day - Bus Driver

I worked at the old Rover factory for 20 years before joining National Express. As I've been here since November 2000, you could say I'm used to being around vehicles! Saying that, I joined National Express as I really wanted to be a Bus Driver. It’s a great job where I'm out and about all day rather than being stuck in an office or factory, and I get to meet a variety of people and help them get around.
